Description
Ogiri Okpei (also called Ogiri Ijebu) is a pungent, fermented seasoning made from castor seeds, sesame seeds, egusi seeds, or a blend thereof. Beloved in Yoruba and Igbo cuisines, it offers a strong umami aroma—often likened to aged cheese or miso—that enriches soups like Egusi, Ogbono, Nsala, Oha, Bitter Leaf, and leafy vegetable dishes.
This seasoning acts as a natural flavor enhancer in traditional West African cooking. Ogiri is made via fermentation, salt, and dried oil seeds, and is not interchangeable with locust bean (iru), although sometimes mistaken by those unfamiliar.
It’s typically packaged in compact sizes (2–4 oz) and used sparingly to avoid overpowering dishes.
